The primary teeth, sometimes referred to as the baby teeth, are small and temporary, but they play a huge role in children’s development and setting up the future of their smiles. The primary teeth set the stage for healthy pearly while going forward. Continue reading to learn more about the primary teeth, why they are so important, and how you can help your child care for them.

What Are the Primary Teeth?

The primary teeth are the first set of teeth that grow in a child’s mouth. They help young children learn how to eat, speak, and smile properly so they can thrive! Most children develop 20 primary teeth, including the incisors, the flat teeth in the front of the mouth, canine teeth, the pointed teeth next to the incisors, and the molars, the big plat teeth in the back of the mouth. By the time your child turns three, they should have all of their primary teeth.

What Makes the Primary Teeth So Important?

Primary teeth eventually come out, but they are crucial for your child’s wellbeing. Here are some of the reasons why.

  • Chewing & Digestion: Primary teeth make it possible for children to chew their good and get the nutrients they need. These teeth are necessary to digest properly.
  • Speech Development: Teeth are necessary for much more than just eating. They are also needed to help young children form sounds and learn how to speak and pronounce words clearly.
  • Preparing Permanent Teeth: Primary teeth help to guide the permanent teeth when it is time for them to grow in. Without primary teeth, the permanent teeth are likely to grow in crooked or crowded.
  • Forming Healthy Habits: Learning to care for the primary teeth helps children to form good oral hygiene habits at an early age. This way, they will be ready to care for their permanent teeth when they come in.

How to Care for Primary Teeth

Just like adult teeth, primary teeth require care an maintenance. Here are some steps you should be taking:

  • Brushing & Flossing: You should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first one erupts. You should also floss any teeth that touch.
  • Regular Checkups: Your child should attend routine cleanings and checkups every six months.
  • Limit Sugar: An occasional sugary treat doesn’t usually do too much harm, but you should encourage healthy snacks as much as you can.
  • Drink Water: Water helps to wash away food particles and prevent dry mouth.

The primary teeth are pretty spectacular. After all, they do so much for your child’s growing smile!
