Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance is similar to health insurance in that for exchange for a monthly premium, you gain access to a broad array of discounts on services. What’s important to know, however, is that dental insurance is primarily focused on prevention as opposed to helping patients fix problems that have already developed. It’s mostly designed to help patients be proactive so they can take care of small problems before they turn into bigger, more expensive ones later.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Even though every dental insurance plan is a little different, most have the same basic benefit structure, which is this:
- Preventive care (checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments) is covered 80-100%.
- Restorative care (fillings, crowns, extractions, pulp therapy) is covered 45-75%
- Cosmetic services (like teeth whitening) are typically NOT covered because they are deemed medically unnecessary.
With this in mind, the easiest way to get the most out of your plan is to simply have your child attend their two recommended checkups and cleanings each year. Insurance will largely or completely cover these appointments, and they’ll drastically reduce the chances your child will need more advanced procedures over time. For children in higher risk groups or with additional needs that exceed benefits allowed by your insurance, our Wellness Program is a great way to supplement the coverage of your dental insurance.
Our In-Network PPO Dental Insurance Providers
Sprout Dentistry for Kids is proud to be in-network with many of the most popular dental insurance providers in the country. While we are happy to accept all PPO insurance plans, being in-network simply means we have an agreement with those specific providers to charge set fees for our services, which are usually discounted compared to our normal rates. Basically, going in-network is another simple way to maximize your plan, so at Sprout Dentistry for Kids, we make it nice and easy for everyone to save at the dentist.
